The Details of Clutch Replacement

By Charles on Mar 24, 2011 with Comments 0

Sometimes the vehicle owner will need to go down to the details that are involved in clutch replacement. The example of clutch replacement indicates that most vehicle owners are rather frightened of this task which is considered to be technical. In order to make your job easier, these are some of the things that you need to do as preparation for the process. You might skip some of them if you feel that they do not necessarily contribute to the effectiveness of the job that you are doing:

Cleaning

Make sure that you clean the underside prior to the process of clutch replacement. You need to do this activity a day in advance. The car ramps should be cleaned as well. The other parts that you examine should include the driveshaft and bell housing. Some drivers will also insist on looking at the driveline areas. The job is easier when you get rid of the debris that can hamper you from executing the task correctly. It also means that you are not bogged down by a heavily soiled vehicle. These are some of the tactics that can make a difference in the long run.

Stability

Ensure that your vehicle is stable as you work. The process of clutch replacement requires that you are firm on your feet as you work. It is not advisable to take up the task if the vehicle is moving from side to side. You will need to ensure that the transmission system is intact and that you can work without getting disrupted by all the commotion that is going on. The car should not be allowed to shift or slip regardless of the way that you are repairing the clutch system. If you have a good jack stand, then it is easier to keep the vehicle stable. You need a minimum of four although you could have a spare one for exceptionally large vehicles. You need to lift the car to about eighteen inches in order to work properly.

The stock exhaust system

Although this might not be directly related to the process of clutch replacement, you are strongly advised to look at it. The system might be rusted until it gets tight around the manifold and mid pipe connections. You have to coat the bolts, flange and exposed threads using PB blaster. There are times when you do not need to remove anything because the system is in good working condition. Penetrating oil has been used effectively as an alternative and you might want to look at the possibilities that it represents. Make sure that you loosen the three flange nuts in order to tilt the engine.

The driveline

This part is removable. Of course there are some vehicle types where it is tucked into the channel and you need to work with it when it is intact. You have to check whether it is the original as you undertake clutch replacement. You can add an extra flange down the transmission line in order to make it easier to complete the replacement process. The driveshaft has the propensity to turn as you work and therefore you need to find some ways of keeping it intact. Likewise you need to ensure that the spare parts that you are using can fit in with the vehicle type that you are dealing with at the time.

Take the opportunity to check other things

As you undertake clutch replacement you should take the opportunity to ascertain whether other things have gone wrong and need replacement. This will help you in the future when you want to avoid a breakdown.
