How to Repair Rock Chips in the Windshield

It is not surprising for many of you that rock chips in your windshield are repairable. Yes, it is repairable unless it is not exactly on the critical area – directly in line of sight of the driver in the windshield. It is almost inexpensive to repair your windshield rather than have it replaced.As you all know that windshield is made of glass and its repair work certainly require a special techniques and precautionary measures on your behalf. Remember, glass is fragile and can break at any time, so it is important to handle it with care every time you work on it.
- To begin with, windshield repair technician first bores a hole into the rock chip. Then they apply some vacuum pressure and later filled it with a resin through injection. Resin used in the repair of windshield rock chips is optically compatible with glass. After injecting the resin into the rock chip, technician use ultraviolet light to cure it. The excessive resin is then scraped off from the glass and in the end the window cleaner is used to clean the windshield. This repair work ensures that no further cracking will be done in the rock chip.
- Although the repair work is done with care, there are chances that the chip will crack further during repair work. In that case most of the companies apply cost of repair to a cost of replacement. Due to increased competition and introduction of new global markets, the prices of the windshield has come down considerably, but yet it is profitable to have your windshield repaired and it often takes half an hour to complete.
- Windshield repair is more a structural repair instead of a cosmetic repair so be ready to see any flaw where the rock hit the windshield. Any sign if improvement is a bonus for you. It is often seen the accumulated dirt and debris in the crack make the repair work a bit sluggish and you may no get the clear look.
- It is therefore suggested that the repair work should be done on your first instance. The more sooner you have your windshield repaired, better will be the result as less debris and dirt accumulated in the crack.
- As soon as your windshield sustain a chip, cover it with a clear tape, this will keep it clean, dry and free from any dirt and debris. Before you get it repaired, avoid car wash, and driving in extreme hot weather conditions as it further deteriorate the chip. To avoid the repair cost you can check your insurance, sometimes insurance companies waive the deductible for a windshield repair.
