How to Replace an Oil Filter

Changing an oil filter can be very handy not for your vehicle only, but also for you as it save you a lot of money. Instead of taking your car to auto workshop and spending heavy amounts on oil filter change you can do this task easily in your own garage or parking lot. You just need to have the required tools and the know how of the location and installation of the oil filter. You can consult your owner’s manual for this.

Material

  • Oil Filter Wrench: Usually made of chain or plastic with adjustable loop or strap with a handle. It is better to use good quality oil filter wrench for better leverage to take the oil filter away from the socket.

  • Replacement Oil Filter: Make certain that the replacement oil filter should be of same size and specifications as for your vehicle made and model. Any other oil filter may not work effectively for your vehicle.

Instructions

  • Before changing an oil filter, you need to drain out all the oil from it. Use a drain pan and drain all the oil from the oil filter completely.
  • Raise the vehicle with the help jack or axle stands.
  • Oil filter is a round tin can usually located under the car. Try to take it off with your hands first. If it comes out then it must not be installed properly.
  • Mostly the oil filter is very tightly attached to its holder with screws and cannot be removed with hands. You need to use oil filter wrench to remove it from its holder or receptacle. Remove it carefully as oil may spatter on your face or skin, especially protect your eyes.
  • Lubricate the rubber gasket and of the new gasket with oil. This will help new filter to grip the surface tightly on the holder.
  • First use your hands to fasten the oil filter to its holder or receptacle. Use wrench afterwards to properly fasten it.
  • Once you have done with all the work, refill the oil filter with oil and take your vehicle for a test drive. Inspect for certain leaks or excessive friction noise.

For better performance and long life of your vehicle’s engine, it is better to replace the oil or oil filter after every six month. This article will really help you to replace the oil filter at home and you can save a big amount. Keep your vehicle maintained and avoid mishaps.
