How to Repair Rusted Truck Frames

Rust forms due to the rip off protective covering from the surface. Once the protective covering worn off, the surface is exposed to the moisture and other elements that cause rust to it. Truck frame is something which is lying under the main body, examining the metal structure of the frame is quite a difficult task in that way. The only way to inspect and repair is to disassemble the frame. Hereunder we will discuss few steps to repair the rusted truck frame.

  • The very first step is to evaluate the damage. This is an essential part of repairing the rusted truck frame. Examine the frame in patches first and see if the rust patches are small or big. If your frame yield too much of rust, it is better to inspect the whole frame. Do not leave a single point of the frame. That will give you a better idea of how to deal with your truck frame. Repairing one part and leaving the other may not be a useful activity. If you are working on a frame – work on entire frame to make it strong and rust free.

  • To have a better access to the truck frame, you can remove the dispensable pieces or unimportant parts that are welded to the frame. You can use grinder or cutting torch to remove those parts. The clearer the frame better will be the repair work.
  • Now you have to sand down the whole frame. The best option to sand the whole frame is to use sandblaster. It will make your task easier. However, if you don’t have the sandblaster, you can do this job with hands with sandpaper. Remove all the rust and old paint properly from the frame. Once you are done, check the frame for cracks and severe damages.
  • Take help from grinder, hack saw, or cutting torch to cut the severely damaged metal pieces off from the frame. Sometimes it happens that the frame is made in sections from different metal pieces. In that case some pieces get more rust damage than the others. You have to remove those metal sections which are extremely damaged. Remove all the rotted, rusted and damage pieces from the truck frame.
  • To make your task easy, it is better to make the templates of the required metal pieces. You can use cardboard to make the templates. Templates are so made that they include all the parts like holes, bolts, braces and size (length, width) etc. after creating a template, place it on the frame at the required place and check if adjust in that place precisely or not.
  • Place a metal piece on the flat surface and lay the template over the metal piece. Take a spray gun and spray on the metal piece with template lay over it. Once you are done, remove the template and you will see a perfect template on the metal piece. Take a jigsaw and cut the metal piece align with the template. Take a drill machine to drill the holes on the metal piece. Sand the metal piece.
  • Take a rust proofing material and apply it on the metal piece and on the whole frame.
  • If you have cut the frame into two or more pieces, now is the time to realign the frame. Always put the frame on level surface before realigning it.
  • Take a welder and weld the metal piece onto the frame. Try your best to keep the welding to that like the original. You have to make sure that the piece welded to the frame is strong enough to last long.

10.  Once you have finished with welding and all, sand down the area again. Make it smooth and apply primer over the repaired area or on entire frame. It is better to apply on an entire frame to make it secure. Let the primer dry. In the end apply paint to the frame. Your rusted frame is now giving you new brighter look.
