How to Polish Your Car

A well maintained shiny and sparkling car is always in demand. Most of the drivers want their cars having showroom finish and shine. It is not necessary to spend heavy amounts on getting the new look at car care centers; you can polish your car at home without spending much on the professional car wash.  Here are few instructions which help you to polish your car.

Exterior Detailing

Auto detailing is the process of cleaning of the car thoroughly. To get the factory shine, exterior detailing should be required regularly. Exterior detailing involves three basic things:

  • Claying: Auto detailing clay is used to remove the pollutants and contaminants from the surface of the vehicle.
  • Waxing: It is done to keep the shine and smoothness of the car exterior for longer period of time through wax protective layers.
  • Polishing: It is done to give the showroom or factory shine to the vehicle. Polishing and waxing both are important to keep your vehicle’s exterior shiny and glossy.

Items

Following items and material is required to polish your car:

  • Car Polish: Be careful while buying polish. If you have not planned to perform clay job don’t buy polish with abrasive particles.
  • Polishing Cloths: Terry cloth towel of pure cotton is an excellent polishing cloth. However, there are certain other polishing pads and buffing cloths available in many car care stores.

Power polisher is a rotary device used to polish your vehicle. They are mostly used by professionals but you can also use them to make your polishing job easy. But you can polish your car with hand for regular polishing tasks. There is no compulsion to buy this tool.

Instructions

  • Make sure that your car is not parked in direct sunlight. To get the best results from polishing, always park your car in a garage or under shaded driveway.
  • Before applying any polish to your vehicle, wash your car thoroughly to make it free from any debris or dust present on the surface of the car. Never use strong pressure hose, it might damage the paint.
  • It is better to work on small, manageable sections. For instance, the hood can be divided into four equal sections, a rear panel and a fender at a time, and a door can be divided into two sections.
  • Make sure that you have read the instructions on label carefully. Follow them strictly. There are certain polish brands that may not work with pearl or flat matte coats. There are many others which are not supposed to apply on rubber, glass, or plastic.

  • Take polish and apply small amount of it on surface and on the terry cloth.
  • Distribute the polish evenly on the section with circular motions. Carefully examine the surface of the car for any signs on contaminants in paint coat.
  • Let the polish dry for about 10 to 15 minutes. It will give you dry cloudy looking haze look after being dried.
  • Take the clean polishing cloth and wipe it off.

To get a sparkling shine exterior is not a tough task. With right kind of material and tools you can do this job at home.
