For most of the drivers, engine performance is the top priority. They always look for new ways to enhance the performance of the engine. Setting a new gap is a part of increasing the performance of the engine. Let us see how you can set a new gap on spark plugs.
Spark Plugs Gap
Most of the cars depend upon spark plugs to initiate the ignition process. When fuel is ignited, it pushes the piston downward with immense force, causing flywheel to move. The electrode in spark plugs result in creating an electric arc, which is exposed in the cylinder to fuel-air mixture, eventually causes the combustion process to start.
Basically the gap on spark plugs is the gap between the ground electrode and the center electrode. By setting the distance of this gap, many drivers try to enhance the performance of the car’s engine. But this can be done so precisely, no amateur can do this job without having enough knowledge about the different components of the engine.
Required Tools
Following tools are required to gap spark plugs:
- Gapping tool
- Socket wrench with ratchet
- Owner’s manual
Instructions
With the help of following instructions, you will be able to set spark plugs gap.
- For recommended spark plug gap, please refer to your owner’s manual. It will guide you and tell you the right distances for gapping.
- Remove the spark plug from their container with the help of socket wrench or ratchet. Remember the positions of the spark plugs.
- Wipe any dirt or debris off from the spark plug electrodes.
- Take a gapping tool and measure the gap. You can adjust the gap according to the owner’s manual.
- Make sure that the gap should neither be too wide nor too narrow. Adjust the correct distance carefully.
- After setting the gap, reconnect them on their receptacle. Don’t forget the order; they must be in proper order. Switch on the engine and check the results.
Don’t indulge yourself into a situation where you cannot even help yourself. Always try to do things of which you are familiar of. Car modifications and customization is not an easy task. But this article will help you at least to set spark plugs gap.
