By Marc Howe on Jun 27, 2010 with Comments 0

Technological development has made many things easy for us. A single click and your task are done. We have seen the traces of this development in the automobile industry as well. Power windows are one such example. You can control the windows up down movement with a button, instead of rolling it up and down manually like in conventional vehicles. In this article we will focus on how to repair the defective power windows.

Tools Required

  • Test light
  • Jumper wires
  • Power windows
  • Screwdriver

Instructions:

  • Park a car on safe place to do the repair works. Make sure that the ignition switch is set to on position. Power windows in most of the vehicles do not work with ignition switch at off position. To control the switches of all the windows set the lock control switch on the driver side window panel to ON.
  • Locate the main circuit breaker or fuse under the dashboard at driver’s side. Check the fuse, if it is damage, replace it. Later, check the power windows either they work or not.
  • Inspect the wires between fuse and the switch with the help of test light. You can remove the switch from the panel with the help of screwdriver.
  • Give a good ground connection to the wire of test light and switch the ignition on. Place the tip of the test light on the wire connected to the switch. If light does not turn on, it means that the problem is with the wire coming from the fuse. That wire is not supplying enough power to the switch.
  • In case only one window is not working, locate the switch for that window and if possible remove it with the help of screwdriver. Connect the wire of test light with good ground connection and later connect both the electrical connectors of the switch with the test light.
  • Check the wire for an opening that is connected to the main switch, if no light turns on. If light turns on second electrical connection of the switch means that the switch is malfunctioned and needs to be replaced.
  • To check the working of the window’s electrical motor, remove the door panel. Keep the test light on the wires coming from the switch and turns on the switch. No effect on lights means the wire is short at some point. But if light turns on that mean the wire connections are working fine.
  • Take a battery and few jumper wires. Connect the electrical connectors and the battery with the help of jumper wires. No movement in motor suggests that you need to replace the motor. If the motor works then the problem must be with the electrical connectors of the switch.

Like any other power devices, power windows can and do receive damage over time and again but you can repair the minor issues on your own.
