By Marc Howe on Jun 22, 2010 with Comments 1

It is believed that driving is all about performance. Besides this if you have a flashy car that will add a boost to your performance. Many drivers spend a lot on car looks; they spend on paint jobs, lamps, window tints, interiors but often neglect to have a set of new rims.

Along with other stock parts, changing your tire rims can definitely provide a new looks to your vehicle. It is quite tough to install new rims and mostly this job is done by professional auto modders (who customizes). But choosing or selecting right rims for your tires is all up to you. In this article we will give you some useful information and tips to select the best rims for your tires.

Tire RIMs How to Choose the Right Rims for Your Tires

Size of Tire and Rim

The essential part of choosing or selecting a set of rims is to have a proper knowledge about both the radius and width of the wheel. Because wheels are that part of your vehicle on which you and your passengers’ safety depend. The fact of using a car for daily routine driving or for sport stuff really makes a difference while choosing a set of rims.

  • Wheel Width: The width of rims and wheels is determined by the wheelbase and the width of tire. Though, larger wheel width gives more stability, but makes the turning difficult for the car. On the other hand, a narrow wheel width enhances the turning ability, but also raises the chances for the car to flip over easily.
  • Wheel Radius: Wheel radius is the total distance from the center point to the edge of the wheel. If we double the value of the radius we will get the diameter. Most of the vehicles have 17-20inch wheels.

How a Wheel is built?

There are mostly two types of metal used to make a wheel, steel wheels or light alloy wheels. This structural design has a major influence on the performance of the vehicle.

  • Steel Wheels: Steel wheels are used in most of the vehicles running on the roads today. They are long lasting light weight wheels. To make the steel light, it is shaped into tubes or used with other hollow construction techniques.
  • Light Alloy Wheels: Light alloy wheels are comparatively more expensive than the steel wheels, but are lighter than steel wheels. They are also long lasting like steel wheels and are used for racing and high performance.

Design

Performance rims usually help cool the brakes discs on high speed tracks, but they do nothing more than to give new look to your vehicle on roads and streets. They do the same function like stock rims and wheels do but with adding extra grace and look to your vehicle. There are generally three types of rim designs which you may consider for your vehicle.

  • Spoke Wheels: Spoke wheels are suitable for the vehicles that have high performance braking system. They are steady and stable.
  • Wire Rims: Wire rims are considered to be the most classic one. They are built with wire spokes, specially designed for muscle cars, vintage cars and classic sports cars.
  • Chrome Spinners: Chrome spinners are unique in mechanism loosely fastened to the actual rims. They move freely on the actual rim through a gear mechanism or an electric system. Chrome spinners really make your vehicle a looker on the streets and roads. Neon or LED lighting is also found in some of the chrome spinners.

To give your vehicle extra bit of look and value, you can use different types of rims and wheels. These rims and wheels add to the look of your vehicle and make it a looker on the road. Besides, all the other routine maintenance and working on your vehicles’ external looks, i.e. paint jobs, polishing and waxing; wheels and rims can also add some more to the overall looks of your vehicle.
