How to Replace a Muffler

Muffler is used in automobiles to reduce or lessen the noise of the engine. With the passage of time they can become ineffective and so you must be aware of the fact that how to replace the damage or ineffective muffler. To replace a muffler is bit a difficult task, but you can still replace them with the help of some appropriate tools and skills.

Items Required

  • Rag
  • Gaskets
  • New muffler
  • Jack
  • Wrench
  • Cleaner
  • Bolts
  • Penetrating lubricant

Muffler How to Replace a Muffler

Take Away the Old Muffler

  1. Take a jack and lift the rear of the vehicle up, so that you will easily access the muffler.
  2. Locate the position of the muffler. It would be settled on the exhaust system with the help of the bolts. There would be rubber muffler hangers also which is holding it to the body of the car.
  3. Lubricate all the bolts with the help of penetrating lubricant. This will help you to open the bolts easily.
  4. To reduce the strain or pressure on the muffler hangers, lift the muffler up with the help of jack. Once you have lifted the muffler up, you can easily remove the hangers.
  5. Dismiss the muffler with the help of suitable wrench or ratchet. Take out the muffler carefully; otherwise it might fall on you. Later take out the gaskets sealing also.
  6. Take a rag and cleaner to clean the outer surface of the exhaust system forward section.
  7. Detach the old hangers also by unfasten the bolts of the hangers’ brackets.

Replacing the Muffler

  1. Take a new muffler replace it to the exhaust system forward section.
  2. Attach the muffler to the forward section. Replace the old bolts with the new ones and tighten them. Be sure to place gaskets also.
  3. Lift the new muffler up and insert the new hangers over the brackets to support the muffler.
  4. Fasten the bolts of the brackets so that they tightly held the hangers. This will ensure that the muffler is properly attached to the exhaust system.
  5. Switch the car on and check if any signs of air leakage. If you find any sign of leak check the bolts again and if the problem persists, readjust the position of the gaskets by applying steps.
  6. Lower the jack and switch off the car engine.

Replacing the muffler will reduce of muffles the noise of the engine. Be careful while doing this task. Though, it seems easy yet requires necessary precautions.
