A lot of drivers easily go through nighttime driving with caution. However there are drivers who can’t do it. If you feel drowsy during driving, it is very likely that one can end up in a horrible accident. There is no need to worry because there are ways to stay safe and awake during night time drive.
Before Getting On the Road
Try to make plans before time, if you know that you may be going on long drive, and then try to schedule it. If you really need to drive at night and if it is urgent, if not then the best option is to leave at dawn.
Make sure you have enough food items and water for the trip. You should also have a road map, flashlight, light car repair equipment, extra tire and a small tool box for emergency.
Check the vehicle and make sure that the engine is properly working and sufficient gas is filled in. Check the brakes and lights. Many accidents happen because of car failure and it’ll be more challenging at night. Have some sleep during day. It will make one feel refreshed to drive at a best performance.
Look for Distractions While Driving
Roll down your window, cold and strong winds knocking your face will keep you alert. Make sure your eyes don’t dry because it can affect your vision. This is especially important for drivers who wear eye lenses.
Move your head around and don’t keep staring ahead. Look at things in the surroundings. Looking at tail lights or at the white lines on the road can zone you out. Shake your head from one side to another and slap your cheeks if really needed.
Munch on Something
Find some sour candy to chew on. Eat slowly and take small bites at a time, this will not only make the food last but it will also prevent you from feeling sleepy. Another option is to try sunflower seeds because it will keep you busy by moving it around your mouth.
Caffeinated energy drinks are also great. Drink caffeinated beverages, it is a great idea to take along a thermos of hot coffee but don’t spill it all over yourself.
Listen To Music
Listen to music; it will keep you awake and attentive. Choose happy and loud music instead slow and sad ones. Sing along if you can.
Bring a Friend
It is a great idea to bring a companion along while you drive. Chatting and having conversations with then during the trip will keep you interested and awake. You can even switch with your friend to have some rest.
Never Hurry
Drive carefully and slowly taking note of bends and turns on the road. Follow the signs and avoid pressure driving.
When Everything Else Fails, Take a Nap
If you are unable to fight drowsiness, pull over at a safer place and take sleep for ten to fifteen minutes. It will also save you from a lot of trouble later on and you will be surprised at what a little power nap can do to revitalize your body.
The trick to stay awake while driving is to keep oneself preoccupied. Remember these tips, stay safe and have a happy trip!
